Callipo

Premium quality Yellowfin Tuna

An ancient tradition

Callipo company was established by Giacinto Callipo in 1913 in Pizzo, a beautiful village in Calabria region famous for tuna fishing and tonnare. Thanks to its climatic conditions, the Gulf of Sant’Eufemia has always been favored as the ideal environment for the reproduction of Thunnus Thynnus tuna species. For this reason, Calabrian coasts have always been characterized by a major concentration of tonnare and other productions. According to historical documents, the most important and one of the most ancient ones, “la Grande”, was established in 1457 and is located in Pizzo.

Callipo was the first company in Calabria, and among the first in Italy, specialised in tinning the precious tuna from the Mediterranean Sea. Since its establishment, Callipo family has been running the company for over 100 years with the same passion and core mission: "Quality above all".

Premium quality raw materials & Hand crafted production

All Callipo products are entirely manufactured in Italy using first choice Yellowfin tuna only and following the traditional handmade production techniques which have been inherited from local ancestors. Freshly-caught tuna is delivered to the production plant located in Maierato, in Calabria, where only the best raw material is selected and processed under stict quality checks.

Callipo tuna does not contain any preservatives or artificial colours and the glass jars are still filled by hand selecting the best tuna steaks only.
The seasoning process can last up to one year, depending on the product line, to allow the tuna to develop its unique taste and aroma.

Innovation, Research & Development

Callipo has always invested in R&D to develop new products based on the latest market trends to meet the changing needs of modern consumers. New recipes have been developed using only the best ingredients from different Italian regions, including their new premium 'nduja di Spilinga. The company has also introduced a range of jam and other preserves made from genuine and fresh fruit and vegetables grown in Callipo owned orchards and crops.
